Rockville

The city of Rockville is the governmental and approximate geographic center of Montgomery County.  It is located northwest of Washington, DC, and south of the large municipality of Gaithersburg.

As the governmental seat of Montgomery County, many official buildings are located in downtown Rockville. These are the County Office Building, Rockville City Hall, the Courthouse and other official buildings surrounded by adjacent high-rise, mid-rise and smaller buildings housing commercial offices, retail merchants and law firms.

Rockville consists of both a central incorporated town and a broader unincorporated area extending southward toward the Capital Beltway and blending into North Bethesda. Rockville can be reached from Route 355 northbound as well as by Interstate Route 270.

In addition to convenient road access, Rockville is also serviced by commuter rail stations located on Route 355. Washington METRO runs to and from Washington DC; and the MARC commuter rail services the same area running into Union Station from towns in northern Maryland and West Virginia.

At the moment, Rockville is undergoing a significant expansion and redevelopment as it recovers from the failure of the earlier Rockville Mall. The newly developed Rockville Town Center will comprise shops, restaurants, entertainment, condominiums and a newly dedicated library-all of which are laid-out in a more people-friendly town-center concept.

In addition to the redevelopment of downtown Rockville, there has been substantial residential, commercial and retail growth along Rockville Pike and Wisconsin Avenue, heading south toward North Bethesda and Bethesda.

The Rockville campus of Montgomery College is located on Rt. 355 north of downtown Rockville. Montgomery College's three different campuses offer more than 600 courses, with an enrollment of over 55,000 students and 1500 faculty.

One of the most attractive neo-traditional communities in Rockville is King Farm, a 430 acre mixed-use urban-style pedestrian-friendly subdivision incorporating living, working, shopping and recreation-all within its boundaries.

 King Farm Circle

Founded in 1997, King Farm sits between I-270 on the west and Route 355 on the east with the Shady Grove Metro station within reasonable walking distance. Although King Farm is mostly complete, the last section is underway which will soon house additional planned parks, office and senior residential space.

A principal part of King Farm, the 120,000 square foot Village Center and its central Village Green, is a charming blend of lower level retail, restaurant and upper level residential apartments, reminiscent of the traditional old European town flavor

King Farm also has over 45 acres of parks, swimming pools, walking and bike trails, plus exercise centers for its residents.
